HIS FIRST CAREER: MEDICINE
- Tom is an orthopedic surgeon. He graduated from the University of Texas in Austin and Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.
- He studied sports medicine at the prestigious Steadman Hawkins Fellowship in Vail, Colorado, and has been a volunteer physician for the United States Ski Team since 1990.
- Tom decided early in his medical career that medicine was a W-2-based trap. Maximizing leverage and passive income were the path to a wealthier life.
HIS SECOND SIMULTANEOUS CAREER: REAL ESTATE
- Looking to leverage his time, Tom chose to pursue real estate.
- He started by investing in a student condo he found in a classified ad and kept going from there.
- Doctor by day, an investor at night, Tom burned the candle at both ends to earn his independence as the medical economy regressed.
THE BEGINNINGS OF THE RICH.LIFE INVESTMENT SYSTEM
- In 1998 Tom and a partner began construction of a 155,000 square foot medical complex, and by 2004 it housed multiple medical specialties and a full-service private hospital, which he and his partner founded..
- In 2009 he co-founded a private real estate firm focused on ground-up development of multifamily assets. To date, the firm has participated in over $650 million in transactions.
- Since 2021, Tom has been focused on multifamily cash flow and asset appreciation with Carbon Real Estate Investments. Their mission is to provide quality homes to the average American family and produce cash flow plus appreciation for investors.
Today, Burns’ companies have a substantial amount of
real estate under management.
They all operate on these key principles:

- It’s an honor to steward someone’s money.
- It’s an honor to earn and keep someone else’s trust.
- Always tell the truth, even if things go wrong.
